Evolution of the Sonnet: A Literary Seminar with Practice Lab
Unterberg Poetry Center
92nd Street Y
4 Sunday Afternoons, 2:00 – 5:00 pm
February 7, 14 & 28, March 14, 2010
No manuscript submission is required.
The Y will pro-rate if you wish to sign up for half the sessions.
In this seminar, students examine sonnets from the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th centuries, observing the sonnet’s development in form and content from Wyatt and Shakespeare to Millay and Stallings. Each week includes a brief writing lab for students to learn how to write sonnets or, for more advanced students, how to tackle sophisticated sonnet problems. This is both a literary seminar and a practice lab that accommodates all levels, but the practice lab is not required for those who wish only a reading experience.

Launch of the Mezzo Cammin Women Poets Timeline Project
National Museum of Women in the Arts
1250 New York Ave., NW
Washington, DC 20005-3970
The largest database of women poets in the world will be launched in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 27. The Mezzo Cammin Women Poets Timeline Project, which takes place during Women's History Month, will take place at the National Museum of Women in the Arts at 6:00 p.m. The event will serve as both a celebration of women's accomplishments and as a fundraiser for the timeline and will feature poets Rhina Espaillat, Annie Finch, Marilyn Nelson, Alicia Ostriker, Molly Peacock, and Terri Witek. The featured visual artist is Alice Mizrachi.
The Timeline Project is an extension of the Mezzo Cammin journal, a web journal that is published twice a year. Mezzo Cammin was founded four years ago by Dr. Kim Bridgford, a professor of English at Fairfield University and is devoted to poetry by women.
The event is open to the public and is hoping to not only promote the work of contemporary women poets, but also to expose readers to formal poetry by women poets. Admission is $75.00.

Students examine how poets handle seemingly inexpressible ideas and emotions–vague memories, indirect concepts, the quick brush of a feeling or the otherwise "mysterious." Reading examples and then writing poetry in response, students consider how poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Emily Dickinson, Elaine Equi, Herbert Lomax, Howard Nemerov, Praxilla and Wallace Stevens have used the elusive in their work.

Master Class in Poetry: The Twenty-first Century Sonnet
The New School
66 West 12 Street, New York, NY
Is there a 21st-century sonnet? Why has the sonnet persisted, ebullient and lively, over six centuries? How has it renewed itself? More important, how has it renewed poetry and poets? We take a deep dive into as many aspects of the sonnet as we can in the two days of the workshop: the history of the sonnet, techniques of writing sonnets, the sonnet as the classic form of the love poem, the challenge of making the sonnet new in the 21st century. This workshop is open to writers at all levels, beginning to advanced. Emphasis is divided between reading and writing sonnets, using readings to inspire and instruct in rhyme, length, and type of sonnet. 2 sessions, $295.00.
